It isn't just how much sleep you get a night. It isn't whether you only need 4 hours or you need 12 hours. Rest happens in different ways and to different degrees throughout your body.

If your muscles are not getting the repairs they need, you will become weaker or more fatigued. If it is your brain or nervous system that isn't getting the attention it needs, your whole system will start to decline in performance and ability.
By making the time for rest, you actually make your "up time" more effective, enabling you to do more in a shorter period of time. If you think about it, how much do you get done in the first hour of work compared to the last hour of work?
To rest more effectively, observe proper posture and positioning. If you put your body in a bad posture (like on your stomach while you are sleeping) you will make the rest that you do have time for less productive and less rejuvenating.
