Not all melatonin products are the same!
Melatonin is a natural hormone that's produced by the pineal gland in the back of the brain.
Melatonin is released by the brain in small amounts at night, and is believed to be heavily involved in helping us get to sleep.
As we age, we produce less and less melatonin. This is believed to be the reason why the elderly do not sleep as much as young people.
Melatonin is also a potent anti-oxidant, and it's believed that another function of melatonin is to help our bodies recover from stress as we sleep.
But, not all melatonin products are the same...
A big problem with melatonin is its inability to be absorbed from the stomach when swallowed.
This is why a sublingual tablet makes so much sense.
You see, the mouth has a very thin lining. And right underneath that lining are thousands of tiny blood vessels.
So as you let the melatonin sublingual tablet dissolve in your mouth, the melatonin is getting past the inner lining of your mouth and into your bloodstream.
Melatonin for Fibromyalgia
Can melatonin help against fibromyalgia?
There is some evidence that melatonin can help with the symptoms of fibromyalgia.
For example, a study in 2000 showed that taking melatonin 3 milligrams at bedtime improved tender point counts, pain severity, and sleep. Side effects with minimal.
Another study in 2011 concluded that melatonin, wither with or without the anti-depressant fluoxetine, was effective in the treatment of patients with fibromyalgia.
This is especially encouraging because many fibromyalgia patients are treated with anti-depressants.
So the evidence, while limited, suggests that melatonin can help fight fibromyalgia.
But again, we recommend taking melatonin only at night!
There are cheap melatonin products around, but we've concluded (yet again!) that the one from Douglas Labs is the best in terms of quality, purity, and value.
At $12 or less for 60 tablets, that's only 20 cents a day!
