How often do you ask yourself that question only to be frustrated that you have no answer? Do you ever wonder why some people are healthy, while others seem like they are always sick? The reason that you aren't healthy isn't because you are uninformed, but actually because you have been misinformed!
What exactly does it mean to "be healthy"? Is it a matter of feeling good? Is it just not being sick?
No, it is much more than that. After all, I'm sure you have known or heard of someone who always looked healthy, said they felt good, but then died unexpectedly because of a heart attack or stroke or other undetected problem. Were they truly healthy in the days and weeks before their death? Do the problems which cause a heart attack or stroke come on all of the sudden, or do they gradually build over a number of years? Research is revealing that these problems build gradually over a number of years.
Health is a state in which your body, your mind and your spirit are all working at their full capacity. Simply put, it is everything working the way it was created to work. When all aspects of your body, mind and spirit are functioning well, it is absolutely amazing what you are able to accomplish in your life.
So let's say that you have a runny nose or, worse yet, you vomit. Does this mean that you aren't healthy? Actually, in both of these cases you are expressing a high level of health!
What? Time out here! How can throwing up mean I'm healthy?
Vomiting is one of the most effective ways that your body gets rid of toxins harmful to your system. Instead of damaging and possibly killing your system by letting these toxins hang around, your body get rids of them by sending them back up. Pretty smart, huh?
Much the same way, a runny nose is a sign of a healthy immune system that is fighting strongly and is working to maintain the upper hand. Instead of letting the irritant within your body (in this case, most likely a bacteria or other foreign organism) get control, your body stays on the offensive by producing extra mucous, which essentially captures and helps irradicate the unwelcomed guest.
When was the last time you or your child ran a fever? What was your reaction? Did you think that you had to get it down immediately, or else something terrible would happen? Again, a fever is a healthy response of a body and immune system that is setting the stage for a victory. Your immune cells function better under higher temperatures than they do under cooler temperatures. While on the other hand, bacteria and other irritants actually become weaker with heat (which is why we cook food - to kill the bacteria and other harmful irritants in it). So if you go to great lengths to stop a fever, what are you doing to your body's own fighting mechanisms?
Keep in mind, a fever can go too high. But it will only go too high if your system is damaged and not working properly in the first place (which revolves around proper nerve function).
Once you understand better what health really is and how your body works, you will begin to see how you can take some rather simple steps to work with your system to improve your health.
Improving your health isn't really the reward, though. Improved health lets you enjoy more in life, it allows you to do more and to spend better quality time with those you love. That is the true reward of better health.
