You will find a lot of information throughout the internet about lower back pain. Much of the information on back pain relief you find will most likely be accurate, in-depth and informative, but also quite possibly meant to steer you in a certain direction and lead you to a certain conclusion.
If you aren't sure, stop and take a look at who is providing the information for back pain treatment. Surgeons recommend surgery, MDs recommend drugs, Physical Therapists recommend therapy and Chiropractors recommend chiropractic adjustments. In each situation, the recommendation to overcome neck and back pain has a lot to do with what they do and what they know. That doesn't mean that any one of their recommendations isn't a good one, but which one is the right one for you?
Where to Start...
To understand where to seek help, you first need to understand what you need help with. This is probably why you are surfing the internet looking for information on low back pain in the first place.
Now, we could put all kinds of graphics of human anatomy here as well as a long list of complex, hard-to-pronounce medical terms to describe the cause of lower back pain, but that may only confuse you further and take you further from finding out the cause of back pain.
Instead, let's take a simple look at how the body works, and what is wrong when it isn't working the way that it should.
Your body is made up of a number of parts and systems that all are designed to work together in different ways to have the same effect: life. Your bones give you a rigid structure, your muscles move your bones, your blood vessels supply nourishment and get rid of waste for all these functions, your nerves control everything going on in all these processes, your digestive organs absorb nutrients from food to use for body functions, etc., etc.
If every one of these systems is doing its job to its greatest ability, your body functions well and you are healthy. But what happens if even one of these systems stops working the way it should?
If you break a bone, does it continue to support you properly and give you a rigid structure? Of course not.
Overwork or damage a muscle and you will find it very difficult, if not impossible, to move your bones the way that you want or need to. Break or restrict a blood vessel (i.e. heart attack), and quickly everything those blood vessels are supplying begins to die. Overload your digestive system and you will absorb food poorly, leaving you tired, weak and unhealthy.
But perhaps the most important of all of these is in the nerves. If you damage or restrict your nerves in any way, it will effect the development of your bones, as this development is controlled by the nervous system. It will also keep the muscles from working correctly, alter the blood flow throughout the body and make the digestive system perform erratically, if at all.
Too many times to count problems with the nerves are overlooked, and efforts are made only to help the resulting problems that these nerve problems cause rather than addressing the actual nerve problems themselves. When this happens, you will find yourself or someone you love experiencing certain or varied health problems over and over, an increasing number and severity of problems and slower and slower recovery from even simple health struggles. Sciatica is a prime example of this. Many times sciatic nerve pain will occur over and over again, and until the pinched nerve, in this case the sciatic nerve in the leg, is relieved, there will not be sciatic nerve pain relief.
What to Do...
No matter where or how your health problems began or where they are now, be certain that part of your course of action in dealing with them focuses on checking your nerves. Left alone, nerve problems only get worse and cause greater problems.
There are many ways of getting your nerves checked, and several different health professionals are able to do so in many different ways. MRIs and CAT Scans are valuable tools in seeing the nerves and determining if they are being irritated by physical damage or restriction. However, these tests are quite expensive and can be moderately invasive. Physical testing exists which will determine if any great nerve damage has occurred and major harm is present. Many neurologists are skilled in this area and offer assistance in the most advanced cases.
However, these methods tend to overlook problems when they are in earlier stages, allowing "sub-clinical" problems to persist undetected for some times months and years. It has been found that the best ways of checking how well your nerves are working involve physical testing as well as non-invasive testing which looks at muscle function and blood flow quality.
Many health professionals use these methods as part of their evaluation. If you aren't sure, ask before you make an appointment. You can be guaranteed that if they aren't looking for nerve problems, they aren't going to find any, leaving you with problems that will only get worse and harder to solve over time.
